Be Careful On The Street

Ok, it’s been a long time since my last post. I just have to write this.

This morning about 8.15 AM I went to Boromeus Hospital bus stop, i was waiting for my friend to pick me up there. I didn’t pay too much attention to the surrounding, i just saw few person walking and the traffic that still not too crowded. I was sitting down on the bus stop checking my phone and changing the song on my mp3 player, then i look up when someone came over me and said that he just been mug a few second before. I was shocked and just stared at the guy with dumbfounded look, its like WTF. Still couldn’t believe i asked “What?”, he replied “I’ve been mugged just now”. “Really? I didn’t saw anything. Sorry.” Well i saw something for a glimpse, a motorcycle pulled over then the guy on the back step down just before i look down to check my phone. Next thing i know he was coming over to me. It happened so fast that there’s nothing i could do. I couldn’t barely see the look on his face, what a pity but I couldn’t do anything bout it. I looked down the road and the motorcycle was long gone. The guy just walk by still with that look. I was still sitting there for few minute, shocked with dumbfounded look on my face. I still couldn’t believe it until now. In broad daylight, how could that ever happened. Oh man, whatever happened to my city. It’s not like it used to be.

My advice is please be careful on the street, you never know what will happened. My story happened on broad daylight, wonder what would happened at nigh. I thought of some Tip that i hope will be useful:

1. Be aware of your surrounding. Stay alert. Keep your eyes ahead and avoid looking down. Try to look calm and confident.

2. Walk on the right side, there’s a rule for this actually. This way you could see the traffic in front of you. That guy before got mugged from behind.

3. Stay away from the curb.

4. If you’re stopped and threatened. Stay calm and try to cooperate. Don’t make sudden moves that would make the mugger to overreact and hurt you. Your life are more important than any valuable you have. Unless you know self defense or martial art, or if you have bigger weapon. That’s a different story

5. In an attack situation and you’re helpless, you could yell or scream as loud as you can. That would grab of the attention of nearby people. That guy was too shocked he didn’t do anything. Well it’s understandable i guess, it happened so fast.

6. Hide your valuables. Don’t flash your wallet or other valuables as you walk. Avoid talking on the phone while walking, but if you couldn’t help it keep an eye on the surrounding.

7. Travel in groups. Make sure you have a friend or group of friends with you when you’re on the streets. Walk together and help keep each other safe. Especially at night.

8. Keep moving. If a car or a motorcycle approaches you, stay on the sidewalk and continue walking. If you feel threatened, head toward a busy street, open store or well-lit area.

Steganography

Steganography is an art and science of concealing information in plain sight that will not raise suspicion to other people. There will be no one, apart from the sender and intended recipient gonna suspects the existence of the message and will be able to know how to access the information. The technique is that we hide an information or files within another harmless file that we can leave it in plain sight.

I used steaganography in my previous post. The clue is fake PGP, it can be decoded here.

To test out i send an email to my self with two attachment, one is a .txt file while the other one is .docx file. We can view the email source by using an email client like Thunderbird where we can view it with a simple shortcut Ctrl+U, or if we’re using Gmail service we can view it with the Original Source option. Here we break the source part one by one. The main part of an email is header and body. first we’ll see the header part.

The body of an email is the content. It’s look like the body of a regular letter. From above we can see “Content-Transfer-Encoding : 7bit”, it means that the email is using 7bit ASCII encoding. Originally email designed only for ASCII, then how bout a binary file such as .docx that i attach to the email.

It’s look like gibberish isn’t. If we look at the “Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64″, that means that the .txt and .docx file have been encoded with base64. The content of those file is only a simple “andri” but if we look at the encoded one especially .docx its really long and complicated. I cut the encoded message cause its so long.

Those are the content of an email source. It contains all the information about an email especially the header. So if we are to receive a suspicious email it’s a good idea to check on the header first. We could know if its a scam or not.

Hash

“Hash” is a kind of “signature” for a stream of data that represent the contents. While hash function is any well-defined procedure or mathemathical function which can generate Hash, which converts those stream of data into a small datum. If we change the data the Hash Value will also change even if its just 1 bit of change. For example i have these two picture file.

Could you tell any difference from those two. If I didn’t made those two i would say that its the same thing. But it’s not, the left one have the size of 150×150 pixel while the right one is 151×151 pixel. How about the Hash Value? The Hash Value of the left one is:

It’s nothing look alike. The same thing for other type of file. I tried it on mp3 and avi files. You could check it in Hash.zip if you want to. Basically it’s the same, if there’s any change on a file the Hash Value will also change. So if i know the Hash Value of a file then one day its Hash Value change then i would know that someone or something have tampered with that file.

So now i know that different file have different Hash Value. That way Hash could become a some kind of digital signature. But could it be that two different files have the same Hash Value? As a matter of fact it could, it’s called hash collision. This collision could be dangerous, for example and further reading you could read it on:

Deadline

There’s only few weeks or maybe few days left for the end of term. There’s two big assignments, one is for Security and the other is Java Mobile Application/Games. Which either both i haven’t even started yet. Last weekend was long weekend some people say cause the extra holiday on Monday. But i didn’t do either one cause i have business to attend to. And now why do i write this? I should do the assignments instead . Every time i want to do the assignments i always have difficulty to choose which one to do first and it always end up by me not doing anything (sigh). Do i always have to wait for deadline to do my assignments…such a bad habit.
